Women's Health at ABM Pharmacy
Birth Control & Morning-After Pill
Our Pharmacist Can Furnish Birth Control and the Morning-After Pill:
A Step Forward in Accessible Healthcare. In a groundbreaking move toward enhancing access to reproductive healthcare, our pharmacist is empowered to directly furnish birth control and the morning-after pill (also known as emergency contraception).
What Does This Mean for Patients?
Traditionally, obtaining birth control and emergency contraception required a visit to a healthcare provider, such as a doctor or nurse practitioner, followed by a prescription. At ABM Pharmacy, our Pharmacist is trained and authorized to prescribe and dispense these medications without the need for a doctor's visit, making the process quicker and more streamlined.
What to Expect During the Consultation
While the process is streamlined, our Pharmacist will conduct a brief consultation to ensure that the medication is appropriate for you. This may include questions about your medical history, any current medications, and your specific needs. We may refer you to a healthcare provider if certain conditions are present, but for most patients, the process is simple and confidential.
Medication Abortion Care at the Pharmacy
ABM Pharmacy Provides Medication Abortion Care:
Expanding Access to Safe and Supportive Reproductive Healthcare
Pharmacies have long been trusted providers of essential medications, offering everything from prescriptions for chronic conditions to life-saving treatments. Now, as access to reproductive healthcare evolves, ABM Pharmacy is stepping up to play an even greater role by providing medication abortion care directly at our pharmacy.
Medication abortion, which typically involves two medications—mifepristone and misoprostol—is a safe and effective option for individuals seeking to terminate a pregnancy.
How It Works
Medication Abortion at the Pharmacy
Prescription from a Healthcare Provider:
A patient seeking medication abortion must first have a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. This may come from a telehealth consultation, a primary care provider, or an in-person visit to a clinic.
Filling the Prescription at the Pharmacy:
Once the prescription is issued, the patient can take it to a participating pharmacy, such as ABM Pharmacy, to be filled.
Counseling and Support:
At our pharmacy, patients will receive counseling on the process, including what to expect during the abortion (e.g., bleeding, cramping), possible side effects (such as nausea or dizziness), and when to seek additional care if necessary. Our Pharmacist will also provide guidance on managing symptoms and using over-the-counter medications to ease discomfort.
Follow-up Care:
While most medication abortions are completed without complication, some individuals may experience more severe side effects or complications. Our Pharmacist will provide information on warning signs that require urgent medical attention, such as excessive bleeding, fever, or infection. We will also assist with referrals to appropriate healthcare providers if needed.
